New Jersey Firearms Application Registration System (FARS) Process…
The firearms application is electronic, and available at your local Police Department’s website.
Below are general instructions to obtain your purchaser permit. Please follow the below instructions. You MUST be a resident of your local police municipality.
STEP 1: Visit the FARS website. Search NJ FARS on a web browser or enter the site address as follows: http://www.njportal.com/NJSP/fars
STEP 2: When you log on, you must enter your local Police Department’s ORI #
STEP 3: Complete the online application. For Initial applicants you MUST get fingerprinted.
Follow the instructions on the confirmation page to make an appointment to get fingerprinted. All other applicants enter your SBI number when prompted. Your SBI number is located on your Firearms Identification Card. When deciding how many permits you would like to get, remember: *One permit is required for each handgun you wish to purchase (each permit is $25.00) *You can purchase 1 handgun in a 30-day period *Permits are good for up to 180 days (with an automatic renewal after 90 days) *If you decide you want another handgun permit you will need to apply again. *If you are requesting an initial Firearms ID Card (the card is $50.00), no cost for a duplicate card.
STEP 4: You MUST appear at your local Police Department to PAY for your INITIAL Firearms Purchaser Identification Card and/or Handgun Purchase Permits. Your application WILL NOT be processed until you have PAID for the FID Card and/or Handgun Permits. Nonrefundable payment is required to be made prior to the completion of the background as per NJAC 13:54-14 STEP 5: You will be receiving automated email updates throughout this new process. Get started with your New Jersey NJ CCW / Permit to Carry Application Steps!
STEP 1: Complete the Online FARS Application for PTC Go to: www.njportal.com/NJSP/fars Enter your local PD ORI #. If you don’t know it, Google “[your town] NJ police ORI number” or call them. Select “Permit to Carry” as application type. Don’t pick FID or handgun permit by accident. Fill out personal info, employment, references. You need 3 references who aren’t family. They’ll get an email questionnaire and have 14 days to respond.
STEP 2: Get Fingerprinted – IdentoGO All PTC applicants must be fingerprinted, even if you have an FID/SBI already. After submitting FARS, you’ll get a confirmation page with a Service Code. Go to uenroll.identogo.com → Enter service code → Schedule at nearest location. Cost ∼$59.00 Bring ID + confirmation number. Prints go to NJSP + FBI.
STEP 3: Complete Required Training NJ law requires training before approval: Use of Force + CCW Qualification: Must be done by NJPTC-certified instructor (nj-fast.com). Live fire qual: 50 rounds, FBI Q target, 80% pass at 3/5/7/10/15 yards. You’ll upload the SP-182 form signed by instructor into FARS or bring to PD. If you did this already in last 2 years, it’s still valid.
STEP 4: Pay Fees at Local PD Application fee: $200 to NJ Treasurer, non-refundable. Pay at your local PD. Some take card, most want money order/check. FID card is NOT required for PTC, but if you want one too, that’s $50 extra. Application WILL NOT move until paid. Bring FARS confirmation number.
STEP 5: Submit Required Docs Upload to FARS or bring to PD: 4 passport photos 1.5”x1.5”, taken in last 30 days Proof of ownership for handgun you’ll carry: Registration, receipt, or 4 photos showing serial #. Can list up to 3 guns. Training SP-182 form signed by instructor Proof of residency: NJ DL + utility bill if address doesn’t match
STEP 6: Background + References Local PD runs background, mental health check, contacts references. If references don’t reply in 14 days, app stalls. Bug them. PD has 60 days to approve/deny once complete. Then goes to NJSP for final issue.
STEP 7: Approval + Pick Up You’ll get email when NJSP approves. Pick up PTC card at local PD. Valid 2 years from approval date. Restrictions: Card will list handguns you can carry by serial #. To add a gun later = file amendment, $20.
